Ken Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, recently wrote to his counterpart in the UK Government, Greg Clarke, in response to the Green Paper on ‘Building our Industrial Strategy‘.
The letter is highly supportive of the renewable energy sector in Wales, and highlights a broad range of activity which is currently being undertaken here which would ideally be complemented by consideration in the UK industrial strategy.
Ken Skates emphasises the following Wales-specific issues:
- Buildings as power stations (SPECIFIC IKC)
- The need for proactive investment in grid infrastructure to deliver decarbonisation
- The need to include onshore wind and solar in a low-cost energy supply
- The importance of marine energy – including lagoons – to RD&I and business growth
“We’re getting vision from Welsh Government; our sectors also need infrastructure support from UK Government.”
Commenting on the letter, David Clubb said:
“I’m delighted that the low-carbon sector is receiving strong support from the Welsh Government – and I very much hope that the UK Government will recognise both the potential and the UK-wide benefits from helping deliver a sustainable and prosperous industrial community in Wales.”
